Lee Min-ho says was biased toward idol stars

Actor Lee Min-ho has said he used to be biased toward idol singers who expanded their careers into acting including his co-star Gu Hara of girl group KARA for his upcoming drama.

Lee made the remark during the press conference for the new SBS Wednesday and Thursday series "City Hunter" held in front of local and international reporters in Seoul today, saying he "had negative feelings regarding idols" when it comes to acting.

He went onto say, "As a rookie actor, I was faced with many hardships such as getting put in situations that would hurt my pride to land a role. But on the other hand you have idols stars that seem to have it easy."

However, Lee said his thoughts changed after working on MBC's drama "Personal Taste" last year with 2AM member Im Seulong who played his junior from college.

After watching Seulong and now from working with Gu, I feel like acting is not easy for them (referring to idol stars) either. I can tell that they work really hard too. He then added that Gu's cheerful personality brightens up the set.

City Hunter, based on the Japanese manga series by Tsukasa Hojo, tells the story of a playboy private named Ryo Saeba who works to get rid of crime in the city of Tokyo during the latter half of the 1980s.

Making it the first time for the cartoon to be adapted into a TV series, the Korean series portrays Lee as Lee Yoon-sung who vows to get revenge on his father's death. He follows his father's plan and begins working at the Blue House after receiving his doctorate from MIT.

He then meets Kim Nana (played by actress Park Min-young), a judo athlete-turned-bodyguard, who works at the presidential office to protect Choi Da-hye, the youngest daughter of the President, taken on by Gu Hara.

The show, also starring actors Lee Jun-hyuk and Hwang Sun-hee, is a collaboration by famed producer Jin Hyuk of hit dramas "Brilliant Legacy" and "Princess Prosecutor" and scenarist Hwang Eun-kyung of "New Hit" and "The President."

City Hunter is scheduled to make its premiere on the primetime slot starting May 25, following current series "49 Days."

Lee made his debut in EBS' teenage drama "Secret Campus" in 2006 and has since appeared a number of TV series including "Run Mackerel (SBS, 2007)" and "I am Sam (KBS, 2007)." He also took part in Korean films "Our School E.T. (2008)" and "Public Enemy Returns (2009)."

He rose to stardom and became a household name in Korea and throughout Asia for his role as Goo Jun-pyo in the Korean adaptation of "Boys Over Flowers" (KBS, 2009). His last small screen role was in March last year in MBC's TV series "Personal Taste."

미남배우 이민호(24)가 17일 서울 목동 SBS사옥에서 열린 SBS 새 수목극 '시티헌터' 제작발표회에 참석해 3명의 여배우와 함께 연기하는 소감을 밝혔다. 이민호는 호죠 츠카사의 동명 만화가 원작인 '시티헌터'에서 MIT박사 출신 청와대 국가지도통신망팀 요원인 이윤성 역으로 강한 남성미를 발휘한다. 유도선수 출신 청와대 경호원인 김나나역의 박민영(25), 천방지축 대통령 딸 최다혜 역의 구하라(20), 청와대 인근 동물병원 원장 진세희 역의 황선희(25)와 호흡을 맞춘다.
Actor Lee Min Ho(24) attended the press conference of SBS new Wed-Thurs drama 'City Hunter' at Mok-Dong, Seoul's SBS office building on the 17th, and revealed his thoughts regarding the 3 actresses that are joining him in the drama. 이민호는 극중 로맨스의 상대역 박민영에 대해 "20세 광고촬영때 처음 만났고 KBS2 '아이앰샘' 때 같이 해서 어느 때보다 편하고 기분좋게 연기하고 있다"고 밝혔다. 극중 자신을 쫓아다니는 구하라와 관련해서는 "사실 나는 아이돌들이 연기하는 것에 대해 부정적인 생각을 가진 사람중의 한명이었다. 신인배우때 많은 아픔을 겪었고 오디션도 많이 했던 터라 아이돌은 조금 쉽게 연기하는게 아닌가 하고 생각했는데 MBC '개인의 취향'의 임슬옹과 이번에 구하라를 보면서 그에 합당하게 엄청난 노력을 하는구나 하고 느꼈다. 우리 하라양이 밝고 튀게 잘 나오고 있다"고 말했다. 황선희에 대해서는 "뭔가 오묘하다. 챙겨주고 싶은 마음보다 기대고 싶은 마음이 드는 쪽"이라고 설명했다.
Concerning PMY, who's the object of his affection in the drama, he comments "I first met her becoz of commercial filming when i was 20, later on we worked together for KBS2's 'i am sam', so i feel very comfortable working with her." He comments on Gu Ha Ra who chases after him in the drama, "Actually I am one of those who thought that an idol will be lacking in acting skills. I went through the pains as a newbie and attended many auditions. I used to think that perhaps idols have it easier (referring to getting roles). However, after working with Im Seul Ong (of MBC's 'Personal Taste') and Gu Ha Ra, I started to realize that they actually put in tremendous effort and work in their roles. "Ha Ra-yang is very bright and will come out well," said LMH. About Hwang Seon Hee, he said, "there's something mysterious and profound about her. There's more that I anticipate from her rather than feeling that I have to take care of her," he explained.

It's with the thought that we've shown different sides of us and matured a lot that I approach 'City Hunter' and find that we match well. LMH is by nature kind and thoughtful, so I find acting with him the most comfortable and easy amongst the other partners I've had."

이민호가 드라마 ‘시티헌터’ 태국촬영이 있을 때 코끼리가 자기에게 침을 뱉었다고 말해 웃음을 자아냈다.

17일 서울 양천구 목동 SBS 사옥에서 열린 ‘시티헌터’ 제작발표회에 참석한 이민호는 “태국 촬영때 코끼리 등을 타는 장면이 있었는데 그 때 코끼리 코에서 나오는 물을 맞았는데 알고보니 그게 물이 아니고 침이라고 하더라”고 하며 “그 침을 맞았을 때 정말 찝찝했다”라고 고백했다.
LMH who attended the presscon said "While i was riding an elephant while filming in Thailand, some liquid was expelled from the elephant's trunk and hit me. I later realized it wasn't water but saliva. I felt really uncomfortable during that time."

시티헌터를 택한 질문에 이민호는 “내 자신이 굉장히 무덤덤한 성격이다. 그래서 캐릭터를 고를 때 변화가 큰 캐릭터를 하고 싶은 욕구가 있다”라고 답했다.
When asked why he selected City Hunter, LMH replied, "I have a very calm/flat personality. Therefore i like to select characters that have large changes."

또한 “캐릭터 준비를 하는데 눈빛이 가장 중요한 거 같아서 눈으로 많이 표현하려고 한다”라고 말했다. 또한 이민호는 시티헌터에서 액션이 많이 나온다며 강인한 액션 연기를 위해 일주일에 서너번 몇달동안 꾸준히 연습했다고 한다.

또한 이민호는 자신의 보호자로 출연하는 선배 배우 김상중과의 연기에 대해 “아무래도 또래 친구들과 연기할 때보다는 긴장하게 된다”며 “선배의 눈빛과 대사 연기를 보면서 아직 나는 멀었다는 생각을 많이 한다. 부족한 점을 많이 배우고 있다”고 설명했다.
Concerning Kim Sang Joong, who is taking on the character of LMH's guardian, LMH said "I can't help feeling more nervous when acting with him (KSJ) rather than when acting with peers my age. On many occasions, I realize I still have a lot to improve when I see sunbae's acting expressed through his eyes and his lines. I'm learning a lot about the points where I am lacking."

Goo Hara tries to melt Lee Min Ho with her ‘aegyo’ on “City Hunter”






On May 19th, upcoming drama “City Hunter” released new still-cuts of Lee Min Ho and KARA’s Goo Hara, along with a brief synopsis of their relationship.

This scene was recorded on the 8th, in which the two characters met coincidentally for the second time after first encountering each other at the Blue House.

‘Da Hye’, the president’s immature daughter, fell in love with ‘Lee Yoon Sung’ immediately, so she doesn’t hesitate to grab this second meeting as an opportunity to get closer.

She boldly asks, “Can you become my special tutor?” Despite her lovely aegyo, Lee Min Ho’s character remains rigid and cold, drawing interest from fans as to how their relationship will eventually play out.

Unlike their characters, however, the two were reported to be like siblings on the film set. Hara calls him ‘ahjussi’, while Lee Min Ho calls her ‘Hara Goo.’

Producers commented, “We can feel their youthful passion throughout the film set. This is Lee Min Ho’s first project after a year of hiatus, and also Hara’s first official drama. Please look forward to how they’ll be transforming through ‘City Hunter.’

“City Hunter” will debut on May 25th through SBS.

Q) 원작을 봤는지?
A) 아무래도 원작을 100% 가져오지 못하기 때문에 2011년대에 맞는 드라마로 재탄생돼야 해서 영향을 많이 받을까봐 많이 다 챙겨보지는 않았습니다.
Q) Did you read the original manga?
A) Since it will be a 2011 version and the original manga cannot be 100% brought over to the drama version, I was worried about being influenced by the manga, i didn't read much of it.

Q) 원작과 드라마 비교?
A) 같은 점은 내면에 아픔과 외로움을 가지고 있는 인물이라는 거 같고요. 그리고 원작에서 호색한 굉장히 여자를 좋아하고 능욕하고 하하하.그런 모습들은 아마 드라마 쪽으로 많이 표현이 힘들 것 같아서 다른 모습들로 조금은 바뀔 것 같아요.
Q) How would you compare the original manga to the drama?
A) The character I play bears similar pain and loneliness as that in the manga. In the manga, he's a lascivious man who really likes women.. hahaha. it might be hard to show that side of him in the drama so it seems like his personality will be altered slightly.

Q) 태국 촬영 에피소드?
A) 저는 25년 동안 코끼리 코에서 나오는 게 물인 줄 알았는데요, 다 침이더라고요. 코끼리를 타는 신이 있어 코끼리를 탔는데 저한테 침을 뱉더라고요. 그래서 볼 때가 아름답다는 걸 알았죠.
Q) Any particular happenings when filming in Thailand?
A) For the past 25 years, I mistakenly thought the stuff that comes out of an elephant's trunk is water. it's all saliva. There was a scene where I had to ride an elephant and it spit saliva on me. Therefore, when u see it (may be he's referring to the scene?), you would think it looks beautiful (??)

Q) 기대되는 장면?
A) 기대되는 장면이요? 1회부터 굉장히 저희 드라마가 스펙터클 합니다. 굉장히 드라마적인 요소도 강하고 볼거리도 스케일도 그렇고 볼거리가 많을 거예요. 그래서 그 부분을 보시면 재미있을 것 같고 그 다음에는 바로 로맨틱 코미디 느낌의 발랄한 느낌이 드니까요, 그런 변하는 포인트를 중점적으로 보시면 재미있을 것 같아요.
Q) a scene to anticipate?
A) a scene to anticipate? Our drama is dramatic starting from episode 1. It's very dramatic, containing strong elements, there are a lot of things to see, the scale is big, there will be a lot to see. Therefore, people may find those parts interesting. Following next, is the bubbly feeling you get from a romantic comedy. If you concentrate on those point changes, you should find it interesting.

Q) 드라마 '시티헌터' 눈여겨 볼 부분?
A) 저희가 새로 처음 도입된 카메라를 써요. 찍기가 힘든 만큼 화면이 예뻐요 색감도 예쁘고. 그래서 아마 내용도 내용이지만 화면 자체도 이 계절에 너무 잘 어울리는 화면이 될 것 같아요. 그래서 그것도 예쁘게 봐주는 요소가 되지 않을까 생각해요.
Q) Part to watch out for in drama 'City Hunter'?
A) we introduced a new camera. Although filming is hard the picture comes out pretty and the colors are also beautiful. Therefore, although the content is important, the picture quality suits the current season very much. Therefore, I think that might contribute as an element that beautifies the drama.

Q) 드라마를 위해 준비한 것?
A) 실탄 사격장에 가서 사격도 해봤고요. 한 3개월 정도 액션신 준비를 하느라고 꾸준히 액션스쿨 가서 수업했습니다. 일주일에 3~4일 정도는 꾸준히 나갔어요.
Q) how did you prepare for the drama?
A) I went for target practice. I prepared for action scenes for around 3 months by constantly attending classes at an action school. I went around 3-4 times a week.

Q) 상대 이민호와의 호흡은?
A) 민호 씨는 제가 데뷔 후 2달 만에 처음 찍은 CF가 있는데 같이 파트너였어요. 그래서 6년 째 알고 지내는 사이고 작품에서도 한 번 만나고 했고 편한 상태라 오히려 그게 걱정이었어요. 같이 멜로도 해야 하고 하는데 걱정을 많이 했는데 막상 촬영 들어가고 나서 많이 이 친구가 새로운 모습도 보여주고 되게 편하게 연기할 수 있고 예를 들면 업어치기 할 때 준혁 오빠는 살짝 어려웠거든요. 처음에 안 친해서 근데 민호는 그냥 업어치기 하고 민호가 키가 크잖아요. 186~7cm 저보다 이만큼 크니까 촬영하다 보면 앵글이 안 나와요. 그래서 ‘나나판’이라고 촬영장에 새로운 ‘나나판’을 만들어주셨어요. 저 할 때마다 굴욕 잡히는 거 알죠? 애플박스처럼 판을 만들어주셨는데 그거 하다가도 가끔 안 나올 때가 있으면 “다리 벌려 다리 벌려!” 편하니까 할 수 있는 촬영장에서의 소소한 배려들이 생겨서 저는 아주 만족스럽고 잘 나올 것 같아요.
Q) How do u work in harmony with LMH?
A) 2 months after I debuted, i worked on my first CF and LMH was my partner in the CF. So we've known each other for 6 years. we've also met in a project once, we are comfortable which is why I was worried all the more. We have to create a melo together, so i worried a lot. Once filming started, he showed a new side of him, i can film very comfortably, for e.g. when i have to throw someone over my shoulder, it's a bit hard with jun hyeok oppa since we weren't close initially. But I just throw MH over. MH's tall, he's 186-7cm, far taller than me such that when i check after filming, the angle doesn't come out right. So, a new 'Na Na - board' was given to me (so she can stand on it). I feel humiliated every time I use it. It is like an apple box(?) but when that too doesn't work, I can comfortably say "open your legs open your legs!"(to shorten the difference in height). .....?????..... I'm very satisfied, i think it will turn out well.

Q) 박민영과 친한 것 같은데?
A) 네. 때리고요 맞고요 막말도 하고요. 굉장히 편합니다. 아무래도 민영 씨가 웃음이 많아가지고요. 지금도 계속 웃고 있죠. 웃음이 많아서 NG가 가장 많지 않나.
Q) seems like you're close to Park Min Young?
A) yes, i hit, slap and say things bluntly. i feel very comfortable. Min Young-sshi smiles/laughs a lot. she's also laughing now. Becoz she laughs a lot, she doesn't get a lot of NGs. (<--this sounds weird).
