Actor Lim Ji Gyu is selected as the star actor for GHS's first full-length feature.
(you know, news reporters are sometimes slower than the fans~~DC members knew this fact before this article and this is reporters' first report on Lim Ji Gyu! blink.gif I don't get them!)

‘은하해방전선’과 ‘저수지에서 건진 치타’로 전주영화제와 부산국제영화제에서 주목을 받고 부일영화제에서 신인상을 수상했던 임지규는 감독으로 변신한 구혜선의 첫 장편영화에 주인공으로 캐스팅돼 촬영을 시작했다.
Lim Ji Gyu appeared in movies such as Milky Way Liberation Battle Front and Cheetah Saved From the Reservoir. He received much attention through JunJoo Film Festival and Busan International Film Festival. At the BooIl Film Festival, he even received New Actors Award. (In my last translation of an article about Lim few pages back, it was reported that Lim received the award at the recommendation of Ahn Sung Gi who was impressed by Lim and Ahn actually pushed for the Actors Award which was nonexistent in that film festival.)
Now, Lim has been chosen to play the lead role for GHS who has been transformed into a director.

친구 정우(김정욱 분)의 도움으로 자신의 재능을 이끌어내고 주목받는 첼리스트가 되어 정우가 완성하지 못한 지은(서현진 분)의 요술을 완성 시키려 한다. Lim's character receives help from a friend Jung Woo (Kim Jung Wook's role) and becomes a cellist who achieves his potential and recognition. Lim's character tries to perfect and complete the musical score by Ji Eun (Suh Hyun Jin's role) and that which Jung Woo could not perfect.

독 립영화의 기대주 또는 독립영화의 스타라는 수식어가 붙어왔지만 아직은 대중들에게 생소한 임지규란 배우를 감독 구혜선은 외모에서 풍기는 음악가적인 모습과 은하해방전선에서 보여준 자연스러운 연기 때문에 연출부의 추천을 받자마자 바로 내정시켰다고.
Although Lim has been called the future of independent films and star of independent films, the general public is still unfamiliar with Lim. 임 지규는 첼리스트인 명진 역을 위해 11월부터 첼로 개인레슨을 받으며 역에 몰입해 왔다. 첼로라는 악기도 처음이고 상업영화에서 극을 이끌어가는 첫 주연을 맡아 부담감이 많았던 그는 음악원 분량의 촬영을 끝내고 편집한 10분가량의 영상을 보고서는 크게 만족했다.
For his role, Lim Ji Gyu has been focusing on developing his character and receiving private cello lessons since November, 2009. This is his first experience with cello. It is also his first lead acting role for a commercial film. He feels the burden of such a responsibility yet he showed big satisfaction after watching the 10 minute-editing of the music performance scene.

한편 1월 15일부터 인천에 소재한 창영초등학교에서 일주일간의 촬영은 서먹한 분위기에서 시작됐지만 미녀 감독의 시원스러운 큐소리에 금세 화기애애해졌으며 일주일간의 합숙으로 최고의 팀웍을 갖게 됐다고. 이제 한발을 내딛은 요술은 2월 중순까지 촬영을 하며 올 가을 개봉을 앞두고 있다.
The filming took place since Jan.15th at a Chang Myung elementary school located in Inchun. Of course, the atmosphere started out awkward. However, the atmosphere became comfortable and harmonious listening to the beautiful director's lively and unreserved sounds of ' CUE'. The entire MAGIC team lodging together for a week also greatly enhanced the teamwork spirit. So, MAGIC has made its first step and will continue until the middle of February. The movie expects to open in the fall.

Goo Hye Sun has took on 4
roles in full-scale from

music composition to acting in
her first directed full-length
commerical movie. Goo Hye
Sun's directed short film, (The
Cheerful Caretaker The
Madonna) has won the Best
Audience award in the “Pusan
Asian Short Film Festival and
also it is being elected as one
of Korean short films to
participate in “Bucheon
International Fantastic Film
Festival. Her short film is also
being invited for screening for
Japan Yubari Festival which
opens in the coming end
February and this shows that
her talents are widely
recognised.
On the filming day, Goo Hye
Sun said,Regardless of drawing
pictures, music album or
acting, it seems that they all
belong to the same field in the
making of the movie. She also
expressed, The concept plot
for my next production work is
likely to be a love story.
On the part that she has all
charms regardless of being a
director or actress, Goo Hye
Sun explained, “After being a
director, I seemed to realise
more on the acting parts which
I did not know before.She
added on, I do not know how
many people will come to
watch my movie. I hope many
people will come to watch, she
disclosed as a new director.
Magic is a movie which talks on

‘감독’ 구혜선이 영화 연출하는 데 있어 가장 어려운 것으로

배 우 겸 감독 구혜선은 21일 오후 경기도 고양시 일산동
구 아람누리 공연장 내 새라새 극장에서 열린 영화 '요술'
촬영현장에서 연출하는 데 있어 가장 어려운 것은 무엇인가
라는 질문에 “감독을 하다 보니 연기할 때는 못 느꼈던 부
분을 느낄 수 있었다”며 “저예산으로 만들어 촬영이 빡빡
한 점”이라고 대답했다 . As an actress,
budget issue is something she
was hardly aware of. Making
movie with low budget was
very difficult.
이어 "앞으로도 꾸준히 활동하는 감독의 모습을 보여주고
싶다"면서 "시나리오를 써 놓은 것은 아주 많은데 다음 연
출작도 사랑 이야기가 될 듯하다"고 밝혔다.
Director Goo says that she
hopes to be able to direct
more movies in the future. She
has plenty of scripts already
written and, most likely, the
next movie that she would like
to direct is also a love story.
또 단편영화와 장편영화 연출의 차이점에 대해서는 “호흡이
가장 큰 차이점이다”며 “사실 차이점을 크게 못 느끼며 촬
영하고 있다 . 두 번째 작업이라 배우들과의 호흡이 더 좋아
진 게 장점이다. 오늘이 마지막 촬영이어서 배우들과 헤어져
야 해 아쉽다”고 전했다. Goo was also
asked what she experienced as
the big difference between
making short vs long film. She
states that the building of
working relationship is the big
difference. Although she
herself has not fully
experienced it between short
and long films, she thinks that
she has had more time to learn
to better work with and relate
with the actors in the longer
film. She feels very sad to part
with the actors after today as
it is the last day of filming.
연기와 영화 연출 외에 음악, 그림 등 다양한 분야 도전에
대해서는 "연기, 음악, 그림 등은 모두 한 분야라고 생각한
다"며 "특별히 잘하진 못 하지만 계속 다양하게 도전해보
고 싶다"고 말했다. Goo still considers
the art of acting, composing
and painting as all part of one
category. Even though she does
not feel she is particularly
excellent in those art, she
wants to continue to challenge
herself in those areas.
구혜선의 첫 장편 연출작인 영화 '요술'은 치열하게 살아가
는 젊은 음악가들의 사랑과 우정, 희생, 소통에 대한 이야기
다. 배우 겸 감독 구혜선이 시나리오, 연출, 음악, 연기 등
1인4역을 맡았다. 구혜선을 비롯해 임재규 서현진 김정욱
등이 출연했다. 이번 영화에는 '과속스캔들'의 김준영 촬영
감독과 '눈에는 눈 이에는 이'(눈눈이이)의 신명진 조명감독
이 참여했다.

이다. 오늘 마지막 촬영이라 많이 아쉽지만 책임감 있게 진
정성을 담으려고 노력했다"고 말했다.
Magic is directed by GHS and
produced by YG Entertainment.
GHS opened her film location
to the press today. She told the
reporters that she will miss the
work with her crew and her
actors as today is the last day
for filming and that she did her
best with deep sense of
responsibility and sincerity.
구혜선은 이날 야구 점퍼에 스키니진 등 편안한 복장으로 나
타나 촬영장을 진두지휘했다 . 구혜선은 한 손에는 무전기를

음 악영화 <요술>은 젊은 아티스트들의 우정과 사랑을 그

다. GHS's inspiration for her
screenplay, Magic, comes from
having watched the
performance of a male cellist,
Song Young Hoon, last year. It
was her first experience
watching a male cellist
perform. She thought the
performance extremely
charming and gave her so
many ideas.
극중 천재와 노력파 아티스트가 등장하는 것을 두고 본인은
어느 쪽에 가깝냐는 질문에 구혜선은 "노력파라고 하기엔 게
으른 것 같다. 좋아하는 것에 관심을 갖고 열중하는 편이
다"라고 말했다. In her movie, there
are musicians who are geniuis
and who are hard workers.
Reporters asked her which one
is she~genius or hard worker.
GHS's answer: 'I am lazy to be
called a hard worker. Only,
when I am deeply interested in
something, I tend to
concentrate on that.'

구혜선의 첫 장편영화 데뷔작 '요술'에 팬들이 깜짝 출연했
다.
21 일 경기도 일산 아람누리 극장에서 진행된 '요술' 마지
막 촬영에 약 70여명의 팬들이 관객 역할로 엑스트라를 자
청한 것. 앞서 구혜선은 자신의 홈페이지를 통해 엑스트라
모십을 공고, 총 2500명의 지원자 중 100명을 선발해
출연자를 선정했다.
이날 오전부터 진행된 촬영에서 팬들은 음악회에 온 관객 역
으로 자리를 메워 촬영장을 한층 화기애애하게 만들었다 .
A total of 2500 people applied
to become extras. About 100
people were selected to
participate. About 70 people
actually came to the filming on
21st. These fans, working as
audience, made the work day

메가폰을 잡은 구혜선은 "팬들의 도움으로 영화를 무사히

“Boys Over Flowers” heroine,

Yubari Fantastic Film Festival in
Japan for her short film “The
Madonna” (유쾌한 도우미, literally
“The Cheerful Caretaker”).
For this year, the film is under
“ Yubari Choice: Korean Film.”
The film festival will run from
February 25th to March 1st at
Hotel Shuparo in Yubari City.
Goo Hye-sun will be Japan from

I could have lived as an actress satisfactorily. However, I wanted to be true to myself. Nobody can live my life for me. Isn’t that so?

여배우로서 황금기라고 할 수 있는 26살의 구혜선에게 지난 1년은 변신의 연속이었다.
26 year-old GHS could be referred to as an actress with great monetary potential, (hope I translated it correctly), but the past year has been her year of continuous changes.

2008년 촬영해 놓은 단편 영화 데뷔작이 빛을 봤으며 내친김에 장편 영화 ‘요술’을 연출하며 사람들의 머릿속에 ‘감독 구혜선’이라는 이미지를 심었다.

Receiving shining praises for her 2008 short film, GHS pushed ahead and directed another but full-length Magic. She has planted inside the public’s mind of herself as a director.

그뿐만 아니다. 소설 ‘탱고’를 출간하며 소설가가 됐으며 발표회를 통해 일러스트레이터와 작곡가라는 명함을 추가해 넣었다.

It is not just that. She published a novel, TANGO, becoming an author. She has also added to her list of talents as an illustrator and a composer.

마침 TV 드라마 ‘꽃보다 남자’가 시청률 대박을 터트리며 배우로서 한창 이름을 날리던 게 1년 전의 상황. 감독 변신의 부담감 없이 그저 ‘잘 나가는’ 연기자로만 생활했어도 잃을 것은 없는 상황이었다.

Having her last drama, BOF, becoming a huge hit a year ago, she could have easily lived well as an actress.

단편 연출데뷔작 ‘유쾌한 도우미’를 가지고 일본 홋카이도에서 열린 유바리 국제판타스틱영화제에 참석 중인 구혜선에게 ‘신인 감독’으로서 솔직한 포부를 들었다.

While attending YIFFF for her debut short film, Cheerful Caretaker,, GHS expressed her honest aspiration as a new director.

그는 “영화라는 게 우열을 가리는 게 아니라 자신의 생각을 표현하는 것이라는 생각에서 부족하지만 용기를 내 연출을 하게 됐다”고 감독 변신의 계기를 밝혔다.

(I am not sure how well I translated <wooyul garidah.>) GHS: “I think of movies as an expression of one’s thoughts, not as pointing out good and bad. I am still inadequate but decided to have courage and direct movies.”

–유바리 영화제에 온 소감을 말해달라.

GHS’ thoughts about being at Yubari.

▲마을 전체가 동네 잔치를 하는 분위기라서 친근하고 정이 간다. 영화제에 오기 전에는 어려운 자리일 것이라고 생각했지만 막상 와보니 축제 분위기를 즐기게 되는 것 같다.

The whole village feels like it is having a neighborhood party. It is friendly place that draws me in. Before coming here, I felt that it would be a difficult place for me to be, but since I am here, I am enjoying the festive atmosphere.

GHS: 쉴 틈 없이 바쁜 게 좋다. 나는 일을 계속 해야 즐겁게 살 수 있는 그런 사람인 것 같다. 일 없이 쉬기만 하면 왠지 사회에 쓸모 없는 인간이 되는 느낌이다. 잡생각도 많이 하게 되는 것 같기도 하고.

I love being busy so that I have no time to rest. I feel that I am a kind of a person who will have a happy life if I always work continuously. If I rest without work, I feel like a useless person to society with increasing fruitless thoughts.

Q–스타배우 출신의 감독으로서 장단점이 있을 것 같다.=

There must be pros and cons to becoming a director when you are a star actress:

A▲단점보다는 장점이 더 많을 것 같다. 일단 배우를 이해하는 부분에서는 다른 감독보다 더 낫지 않겠나.

I feel that there are more pros than cons. First, as a person who understands actors, I think I am better off than other directors.

촬영 현장에서 배우 출신이라는 편견 같은 것은 없었다. 스태프들 모두 반갑게 맞아줬고 배우들도 감독으로서의 나를 존중해줬다. 배우 구혜선에 대해 모두들 잘 알고 있으니 스태프들과 친해지는 데에는 오히려 배우 출신이라는 점이 도움이 되는 것 같다.

At film location, I did not experience any discrimination because I started as an actor. All the staff welcomed me and all the actors respected me as a director. Because they all knew me already as the actress GHS, it actually helped me to more easily get to know the staff.

Q–감독이 되고 싶다고 생각한 것은 언제부터인가.

When did you start wanting to become a director?

A▲20~21살 쯤 처음 연기를 시작했는데, 그 때는 그저 카메라 앞에서 시키는 대로만 했던 것 같다. 생각 없이 연기를 한 셈이다.

About 20~21, I started to act. At that time, I just stood in front of the camera and followed the direction. I think I acted without much thinking.

이후 현장에 계속 있다보니까 대본을 한 번 써보면 어떨까라는 생각이 들기 시작했다. 카메라 앞에서 여러 감독들을 경험하고 또 연기를 하면서 현장을 공부하다가 연출 욕심이 생긴 것이다.

Afterwards, as I stay long hours on the film location, I started to have thoughts about wanting to write scripts. After experiencing various directors while acting and studing the film location, I had strong desire to direct.

Q–단편 제작비가 5천만원으로, 다른 단편 영화들에 비하면 액수가 큰 편이다.=

You spent 50,000,000Won for your short film. That is pretty steep compared to most short films.

▲일단 영화를 만들자고 무작정 뛰어들었지만 생각보다 돈이 많이 들더라. 세트도 만들어야 했고 디지털 카메라가 아닌 필름으로 찍고 싶은 욕심도 생겼다.

I just plunged into making the short film. However, it cost more than I thought. I had to make the set. I also had strong desire to use the actual film instead of digital camera.

집을 팔아야 하나 하고 고민하던 중 소속사의 양(현석)사장님에게 상의했고 양사장님이 나를 믿고 도와주기로 해서 촬영에 들어갈 수 있었다.

I worried over whether I had to sell the house to make the film. After I consulted my Agency’s President Yang, he agreed to support me. That is how I was able to make my film.

Q–20대 중반의 여성 감독이 장편 상업영화를 만드는 것은 한국 영화계에서 극히 드문 일이다. 스타 배우 출신이라서 남들보다 쉽게 감독 데뷔를 한다는 편견도 있을 듯하다.

A woman in her mid-twenties making a full-length ,commercial-grade film is rare in Korea. I would assume you may get some prejudicial comments that you get to more easily have directorial debut because you are a star actress.

A▲그런 안 좋은 시선이 있을 수 있다는 것도 안다. 하지만 어쩔 수 없지 않나. 연출을 하고 싶은 상황에서 좋은 기회가 왔다. 남들보다 감독이 되기까지의 시간이 짧다고 해서 좋은 기회를 거절할 수는 없는 일이다.

I am sure some people would make such judgments. However, that is a matter I cannot control. For me, I wanted to direct and a good opportunity came. I cannot pass up my chance to make a movie just because some may feel that I am becoming a director too early.

배우출신이라는 것이 부담이라고 팬들에게 “내가 배우였던 것은 모두 잊어주세요”라고 말할 수는 없는 일이다. 패리스 힐튼에게 왜 부자로 태어났느냐고 욕할 수 없는 것과 마찬가지다. 내 입장에서는 주어진 상황에서 최선을 다하는 수밖에 없는 일이다.

Just because some may feel negatively about an actor turing into a director, I cannot tell my fans to forget that I am also an actress. It is similar to the absurdity of cursing out Paris Hilton for being born so rich. For me, given my own circumstances and situation, I am just going to pour out all my best.

A–어떤 스타일의 영화를 좋아하나. 또 앞으로 어떤 영화를 만들고 싶나.

What style of movies do you enjoy and, in the future, what kind of movies do you want to make?

▲눈으로 즐기는 영화, 미장센이 좋은 영화가 좋다. 이명세 감독의 영화를 좋아한다. 공포영화 ‘렛미인’도 참 좋았다. 뻔한 내용인 듯 하지만 여운이 길게 남는 영화를 만들고 싶다. 얼마 전 촬영을 끝낸 ‘요술’도 어디서 본 듯한 캐릭터들이 등장하지만 흔치 않은 사랑 이야기를 담은 영화다. 영화라는 게 30대나 40대, 50대가 할 수 있는 이야기가 있는 가 하면 10대 고등학생이나 나 같은 20대 여성이 할 수 있는 이야기도 있다. 내 또래의 내 이야기를 하고 싶다.

Movies that can be enjoyed through the eyes. I love movies that have great sets and backgrounds. I enjoy movies made by Lee Myung Seh. I really enjoyed the thriller, Let Me In also. I want to make movies that tell normal, usual stories yet leave a lingering resonance. Magic, which is the movie that I recently finished, has characters that may be not so unusual. However, it contains an unusual love story. Movies can be about and for any age~30’s, 40’s, 50’s and even for teens. And there are stories from a 20’s female. I want to tell stories about people in my age range.

○ 잡생각= 생각이 많다는 것, 결국 잡생각이다. 구혜선도 잡생각이 많다. 부모님 용돈은 얼마나 드려야 하나, 강아지 배변훈련을 잘 시켜야 하는데, 그리고 책도 많이 읽고, 개그에도 소질이 있어야 하며, 몸관리를 위해 식욕을 억제하고, 또 자신의 조감독과 싸우지 않아야 한다는 다짐까지. 그녀의 잡생각은 정말 다양하다.
* idle thoughts= When someone has lots of thoughts, it usually means they have idle/distracting thougths. GHS also has lots of idle thoughts. Such as: how much allowance do I give to parents; how do I properly and regularly toilet-train my puppies; I must read lot more; I need to have some talents in comedy; I need to control my appetite to better control my body; I must promise myself not to fight with Director Cho...Wow, she really has a variety of idle/distracting thougths.

○ ‘요술’이 대박 나야 한다= 그녀는 현재 영화 ‘요술’ 후반작업에 한창이다. 첫 장편영화이면서 상업영화여서 흥행 부담이 크다. 제작비를 내준 소속사 YG엔터테인먼트 양현석 이사에게도 뭔가 보여주고 싶은 마음도 있다. 여기에 다음 작품에 대한 구상도 고민이다.
*MAGIC must become a big hit.= She is currently working very hard on editing her movie, MAGIC. It is her first full-length film and also a commercial film and that is why she is feeling enormous burden and pressure. She also wants to be able to show something to YG Entertainmet who has invested into producing her film. At this juncture, she also stresses over how to make her next movie.

*Family=Family is always my strong suppport. That is why I have a strong sense of responsibility. I always think about how my family can live happily.

○ 남자를 두 번 다시 안만난다는 다짐, 그리고 연애= 영화 연출을 하면서 남자에 대한 관심이 없어졌다고 했다. 만날 시간도 없어 원천적으로 사랑을 불가능한 것이라는 생각이다. 그러면서 가슴 한 구석으로 자꾸 하는 질문. ‘내가 진짜 연애를 포기한 걸까?’
*A promise to myself never meet another man (she is talking about potential lover/mate). then there is dating.= While directing, any interest in men disappeared. I have no time to meet anyway so love is just impossible to begin with. However, in a small corner of her heart, she keeps on asking herself, 'did you really give up on love?'

○ 젓가락질 고치기=구 혜선은 젓가락질이 서툴다. X자로 벌어지는 자신의 젓가락질이 마음에 들지 않아 최근 어린이용 젓가락질 교정기를 구입해 열심히 사용하고 있다. ‘젓가락질 잘해야만 밥을 먹나요∼.’
*I must change the way I use my chopsticks= GHS does not use chopsticks the way they are suppose to be handled. Her chopsticks open in X--shape and she does not like it. She bought herself a pair of children's training-chopsticks to practice. She wonders: 'does one have to use chopsticks well to eat?'

○ 금주= 앳된 외모와 달리 꽤 주당이다. 주량을 묻자 “아침까지”라는 묘한 대답을 했다. 그러나 이제 술을 마시지 않겠다는 다짐을 하고 있다. 건강유지와 일에 대한 집중력을 높이기 위해서다.
*Abstinence from alcohol= Unlike her young image, she can drink quite a bit. When asked about her drinking capacity, she gives a curious answer, <unitil the morning>. However, she has promised herself to stop drinking. She wants to maintain her health and to increase her ability to concentrate.
