'City Hunter' Lee Min Ho, pretty boy awakens to action
한가로운 평일 오후 한시, 합정역 카페 골목에 이민호가 떴다. 조용했던 골목이 순식간에 북새통이 됐다. 검정색 전용 승합차에서 내리는 이민호를 보고서 여기저기서 꽃남이다 이민호 아냐? 환호성이 터져나왔다.
1pm on a leisurely ordinary day, Lee Min Ho appeared in an alley near a cafe near Hap Jong station. The previously quiet alley burst into confusion all of a sudden. As LMH got out of a black van, cheers and questions such as "he's goodlooking", "isn't that LMH?" burst out on the scene.
세 명의 여성 스태프와 장난을 치며 내리는 이민호의 모습이 벌써 SBS 새 드라마 시티헌터의 예고편의 한장면을 보는 것 같다. 광화문 추격신을 막 찍고 달려온 그는 전날도 잠을 세 시간밖에 못 잤지만 햇살보다 눈부시게 자체 발광 중이었다. 피곤해서 점심 대신 잠을 청해야 하는 것 아니냐며 기자가 걱정을 내비치자 그는 아뇨, 오늘은 날씨가 굿이잖아요~라며 친절하게 웃었다.
LMH was joking with 3 female staffs as he got out of the van, which seemed like a scene taken right out of SBS's upcoming drama City Hunter. Although LMH merely had 3 hours of sleep the day before, and had just finished filming a pursuit scene at Gwanghwamun earlier on, he was shining more brightly than the sun. The reporter hinted saying "wouldn't you prefer to rest instead of having lunch since u're tired", to which LMH replied corteously with a smile, "it's all right, today's weather is good."아기자기한 카페 쓰리고에 들어선 그는 주위를 둘러봤다. 그리고는 장식으로 배치된 만돌린을 집어 들었다. 간단한 기타 키를 잡았을 뿐인데, 홍대 인디 뮤지션 포스다. 외모도 어딘지 모르게 달라져 있었다. 구릿빛 피부에 헝클어진 헤어스타일, 날카로워진 턱선까지.
Stepping foot in the charming cafe, he browsed the surroundings, and picked up a mandolin that was used as decoration. Even with a light strum of the instrument, he exhibited a Hongdae musician pose. Even his appearance seem to change, from his bronze skin, dishevelled hair, all the way to his sharp chin.그동안 수백명이 넘는 스타를 인터뷰해 온 9년차 기자지만, 아홉 살이나 어린 이민호에게서 느낀 묘한 떨림과 긴장감이 오히려 당혹스러울 정도다. 소년과 남자를 오가는 그의 매력에 중립을 지키기 쉬운 여기자가 과연 있을까?
Having interviewed hundreds of stars during the past 9 years, the strange palpitations I felt with LMH who is 9 years my junior made me embarrassed. Would any female reporter be able to guard a neutral stand facing the charms of this person that oscillates between a boy and man?내 안의 액션 본능, 카타르시스 느껴
My natural action instinct: I experience catharsis-꽃보다 남자 이후 매체인터뷰를 거의 하지 않았어요. 사실 섭외가 어려웠는데 ENEWS24 창간 인터뷰에 응해줘서 고마워요. 007 작전에 버금가는 수준으로 간신히 접선했지만 보람이 느껴지는데요.
-After 'Boys over Flowers' I have almost never done media interviews. Actually, it's hard to get in touch, thank you for supporting ENEWS24's First Issue Interview. I drew closer as if in combat with 007, and barely connected with him, however, i sensed it will be fruitful.ENEWS24의 시작을 함께 할 수 있어서 오히려 제가 더 감사해야죠. 스케줄은 정말로 죄송해요. 항상 촬영장에서 스탠바이 상태로 있어야 해서 따로 시간을 빼내기가 쉽지 않아요. 촬영 시작한 지 한달 째인데, 아직 1회를 다 못 찍었거든요. 갈 길이 멀죠?
"I'm the one who should be more thankful since I'm able to be with ENEWS24 during the first issue. I'm very sorry about my schedule. I always have to standby at filming locations, so it's not easy to take time off. Although i've started filming for a month now, i haven't even finished filming episode 1. We still have a long road, isn't it?"
-살이 좀 빠진 것 같은데 건강은 어떤가요?
-You seem to have lost weight, how's your health?태국 로케이션에서 돌아온 지 얼마 되지 않았어요. 촬영 가기 전에 드라마 캐릭터 때문에 살짝 태닝을 했는데, 그곳에서 엄청 까매져서 돌아온 것 같아요. 살은 액션 스쿨과 수영을 병행하면서 자연스럽게 빠졌어요. 제가 조금만 덜 먹고 고생해도 살이 쭉쭉 빠지는 스타일이라 늘 잘 챙겨먹으려 노력해요. 오늘 점심도 많이 먹어야겠네요.(이민호는 여러 종류의 스파게티와 샐러드를 시켜서 같이 일하는 스타일리스트, 매니저, 헤어디자이너, 메이크업 아티스트와 함께 순식간에 그릇을 비웠다.)
"It hasn't been long since i got back from Thailand. Before leaving for filming, I did a bit of tanning for my drama character, however, i got really tanned after my visit overseas. Due to a combination of swimming and training at the action school, i naturally lost weight. I'm the type that will lose weight if I eat less no matter how difficult it is, so i always try to eat well. I think I will eat a lot during lunch today too. " (LMH ordered several different types of spaghetti and salads to share with his stylist, manager, hair designer and makeup artist, and in a moment, all the food on the plates were gone.)-이번 캐릭터는 꽃보다 남자 개인의 취향 때와 어떻게 다르고 변신을 주려 했나요?
-How will the character this time be different/ or how will you be making them different from that of 'Boys over Flowers' and 'Personal Taste'?액션에 대한 부분을 욕심냈어요. 시티헌터 속 이윤성은 MIT 박사 출신 청와대 국가지도 통신망팀 브레인이지만 예쁜 여성 앞에서 장난도 부리고 해맑은 이중적인 캐릭터를 지니고 있어요. 출생의 비밀과 아픔이 있지만 이를 숨기고, 가벼운 행동도 많이 해요. 그러나 이 역시 어떤 정의로운 목표를 위해서 설정을 잡고 하는 치밀한 행동인 거죠. 원작 만화에서처럼 다소 변태 같은 플레이보이 캐릭터를 예상하시는 분도 있는데, 이건 TV용 드라마니까 너무 기대하시면 안되요, 하하.
"I have expectations on the action scenes. Although Lee Yoon Sung of 'City Hunter' has a PhD from MIT and is the brain of the communications team in the Blue House, he loves to joke in front of beautiful women. He is a bright two folded character. Although he has his hurts and holds the secret of his birth, he hides all of that and frequently behaves frivolously, just as a coverup for a righteous/chivalrous goal. Although there are probably people who expect the character to be a pervert-like playboy just as that from the manga, this is after all a TV drama, so don't expect too much, haha."-이민호식 액션은 총인가요? 칼인가요?
-Is LMH's action in the form of guns or knives/swords?우선 칼리라는 동남아 무술을 배웠어요. 빠르고 민첩하게 상대의 급소를 찌르는 방법을 익혔죠. 액션 스쿨에서 연습할 때는 재미도 없고 힘들었는데, 막상 현장에서 촬영을 하고 나면 쾌감이 밀려들더라고요.
"Initially I learnt a form of southeast-asian martial arts known as kali, where you attack the opponent's vital points agilely and rapidly. It was no fun and hard when i was practicing at the action school, but once I used it when filming, I feel a surge of pleasure."-원래 액션 본능이 있는 운동 마니아인가 봐요?
- Perhaps you are naturally an exercise maniac who has action instincts?남자 배우라면 다 액션에 대한 욕심이 있을 거예요. 초등학생 때 록키 시리즈를 즐겨봤던 기억도 있고요. 운동은 제가 워낙 게으른 데다 살이 잘 빠지는 체질이라서 쉴 때 집에서 아무 것도 먹지 않고 놀면 살이 쫙쫙 빠져서 의도적으로 하는 편이에요. 스쿼시나 볼링, 탁구 처럼 승부 나는 게임을 좋아해요.
"As long as you are a male actor, you will have expectations on action scenes. I remember happily watching the 'Rocky' series while i was an elementary school student. As for exercising, I'm by nature lazy. I lose weight easily so when i'm resting at home, i don't eat anything and play and I shed my weight intentionally. I like games such as squash, bowling or table-tennis where you get an outcome (can tell who wins).-조금만 덜 먹어도 살이 빠지는 체질이라니, 역시 이기적인 유전자라는 말이 사실이군요. 가족들도 유전자들이 다 남다르던데.
-Even by eating a bit less, he gets to lose weight. As expected, the saying of an egocentric(? may be she means superior??) gene is not a lie. His family members who possess the same gene are uncommon.다른 건 모르겠고 키는 다들 커요. 아버지가 182cm, 어머니 168cm, 누나가 172cm니까 가족들 평균 키가 177cm쯤 되겠네요. 자꾸 이기적인 유전자라 하시는데 우리 누나는 솔직히 안 예쁘잖아요. 그냥 평범해요. 그렇지만 정말 좋은 누나에요. 저 때문에 누나가 힘들 때도 많을 텐데 늘 한결 같고 힘이 되어줘요.
"I'm not sure about the rest, but everyone's tall. My dad's 182cm, mom's 168cm, my sister's 172cm, so the average height in our family is around 177cm. Although people say we have a superior gene, my sister is actually not pretty, and just average looking. But she's truly a good sister. Although she probably experiences difficult times because of me, she's always unchanging and becomes my source of strength."-시티헌터는 이민호 원톱 드라마로 봐도 무방한데 책임감이 남다르기도 하겠어요.
N: sorry, i don't understand this sentence well so not translating다행히 태국 촬영 때 아버지 역할로 나오는 김상중 선배님과 함께 가면서 많이 의지를 했어요. 물론 한국 촬영 때에는 후배들도 많죠. 어딜 가나 막내였는데, 이번엔 구하라, 양진성 같은 신인 여배우들이 함께 촬영하면서 오빠라고 하니까 좋기도 하고 어색하기도 하죠. 상대역인 박민영씨는 누나라 매번 누님들과의 러브라인은 이번 작품에서도 이어지네요.
"Fortunately, Kim Sang Joon sunbae who acts as my dad in the drama was with me in Thailand, so he is my support. Of course, when filming in korea, there are a lot of juniors. Although I've always been a hubae(junior) wherever I go, this time because of new actors such as Goo Ha Ra, Yang Jin Sung, I get to be called 'oppa'. It feels good and awkward at the same time. Since my partner in the drama, Park Min Young-sshi is a nuna, just as it was in my previous works, this time the loveline will be with a nuna. (N: he uses the term nu-nim, more respectful form as he refers to all the female partners he has worked with previously)"-액션은 대역이 많지 않을까요?
-Aren't there a lot of stand-ins for action scenes?차량 신은 카 스턴트 분들이 대신 해줘요. 워낙 위험하니까요. 그것 외에 오토바이를 운전하는 장면이나 직접 몸으로 싸우는 신들은 거의 제가 하려고 노력해요. 덕분에 손 여기저기에 자잘한 상처가 많이 생겼어요.(실제로 이민호는 양 손가락에 난, 딱지가 채 앉기 전의 상처를 보여주기도 했다.)
"For cars scenes, the stunt doubles will stand-in for me, since it's by nature dangerous. With the exception of that, other scenes such as ones where i drive a motorbike or spar, I try to do most of them. Because of that, i have plenty of small injuries on my hands." (actually LMH showed me some of the scabs on his fingers, which were from former injuries)배우 이민호에 대한 오해와 진실
The misconceptions and truth about actor Lee Min Ho-말나온 김에 상대 여배우들과는 호흡이 잘 맞나요? 스캔들 나는 건 아니겠죠?
-Do you work in perfect harmony with the female actors since things might brew up and there might be scandals?솔직히 저에 대한 스캔들 기사가 나왔을 때 많이 당혹스러웠어요. 꽃남 때 인터뷰를 하면서 기자분들의 질문에 친한 걸로만 스캔들이 나는 거라면, 스캔들 날 사람이 몇 명 더 있다고 무심코 말하니까 이민호, 열애 상대 세명 더 있다고 기사가 났죠. 하지만 주위서 우리 사이에 대해 잘 모르니까 겉으로만 보고 사귄다고 오해한다면, 그럴 수도 있겠다 하고 넘길 수 있어요. 정말 억울한 건, 받지도 않은 명품을 받았다고 하거나 팩트를 완전히 왜곡한 기사들과 소문들이에요.
"To be honest with you, i was very perplexed when all the news about scandals involving me surfaced. When I had interviews during 'Boys Over Flowers', i carelessly answered a reporter's question saying, 'if scandals will surface with those i'm close with, then there are 3 more people whom i might have scandals with'. After that articles titled 'LMH has 3 more parties he's in love with' surfaced, didn't it? However I realized that other only view it from the outside and do not know our relationship, so it's possible that they misunderstand. That was how i looked past it. Those false accusations, and mention that I received branded goods which I didn't even receive, those were all distorted reports and mere rumors.-자신에 대한 기사를 열심히 찾아보나 봐요.

Do you diligently search for or read reports regarding yourself?그럼요. 하루 일과를 마치고 꼭 내 이름으로 포털사이트를 검색해 봐요. 오늘은 이런 기사가 났구나, 이런 사진이 떴구나, 팬들은 이런 반응을 보였구나. 보면서 느끼는 게 많죠.
"Of course. After finishing a day's work, I will type my name and do a search on portal sites without fail. So this is the report that came out today, this is the photo that came out, this is the reaction of my fans. There's a lot that I experience just by these."-어떤 댓글이나 반응이 좋은데요?
-What kind of replies or feedback do you think is good?당연히 외모 관련된 말보다는 연기 잘한다는 말이 좋죠. 얼굴이나 인기로 화제가 되기보다는 연기로서 평가받고 싶어요. 연기력 좋다는 말을 앞으로 더 많이 들어야겠죠.
"For me, it's much better to get praised for my acting than for my looks. I want to be assessed for my acting more than for my looks or popularity. I hope to hear comments such as 'his acting is good' more in the future."
-팬들의 응원 때문에 한때 슬럼프나 힘든 시절도 잘 이겨냈겠죠?
-Due to the support of fans, you'll be able to overcome hard times or even a slump right?지난 3~4년간 엄청나게 과분한 사랑을 받았죠. 그렇게 큰 사랑에 대해 사실 제가 해드릴게 별로 없잖아요. 좋은 작품으로 기쁨을 선사해드리는 게 제 입장에서 해야 할 도리라고 생각해요. 태국을 그동안 7번 이상 다녀왔거든요. 이젠 서울 시내처럼 훤할 정도예요. 그런데 갈 때마다 열성 팬들이 제 모든 스케줄을 함께 해주세요. 공항에 안개 때문에 반나절이 연착륙 됐는데도 그 새벽에 수백명의 팬분들이 제 이름을 부르며 환호성을 보내주셨어요. 열흘 내내 택시를 타고 저를 따라오시는 분들도 많았고요. 고맙고 한편으로는 미안하기도 해요. 특히 프로모션 팬미팅 갔는데 제 생일 선물이라며 이민호란 이름으로 기부금을 낼 때에는, 느끼는 게 많았죠. 더 진심을 보여드리고 열심히 살아야겠다는 그런 마음.
"During the last 3~4 years, i've received an overwhelming lot of love. In contrast, I don't think I have done much in return. Giving pleasure to my fans by meeting them in projects is merely my duty. I have visited Thailand for more than 7 times now. It's brightly lit just like downtown Seoul nowadays. Every time I visit the country, I'm greeted with enthusiastic fans who participate in all my schedules. Even when I was held back in the airport due to the fog, there were hundreds of fans shouting my name and cheering me on although it was after midnight/early morning. There were also many who rode taxis and followed me around throughout 10 days. I'm thankful towards them and also apologetic. A lot of feelings go through me, especially during the times when fans gave me a present by donating funds in my name during promotions/fanmeetings. My heart's response is to live diligently and show them my sincerity.-굉장히 적극적인 성격이 인상적이에요. 민호씨는 A형이라는데 O형 기질이 있나 봐요.
-Your extremely positive personality is impressive. Although you (LMH) are a blood type A person, it seems like you're O type instead.아니에요. 생존을 위해서 성격이 바뀌었다고 할까요? 원래 초등학교 때까지 굉장히 내성적이었어요. 중학교 배치를 받았는데 저만 친구들과 달리 다른 학교로 가게 된 거예요. 아는 친구 하나 없는 중학교에서 살아남으려 성격을 일부러 바꿨죠. 축구나 게임 같은 운동도 같이 자주 하고. 그래서 그때 사귄 중학교 친구들이 10년지기 절친이 됐고요.
"Not actually. Should I change my personality to survive? I was an introvert up to elementary school. However, when I received placement for secondary school, I was sent to a school different from any of my friends. I knew no one when I was in middle school. In order to survive, I deliberately changed my personality. I often played games such as football with them, that is why the friend I had during middle school years have become my close buddies of 10 years."-학교 얘기가 나오니, 정일우 군과는 대방동 얼짱 친구로 유명했잖아요.
-Now that you mentioned about school, Jung Il Woo and you were famous as Dae Bang Dong's uhljjang (best face).반포중학교 다니다 당곡고등학교로 진학하면서, 주로 대방 영등포 보라매 쪽에서 친구들과 많이 어울려 다녔죠. 그러면서 친구 소개로 (정)일우를 만났어요. 둘다 술을 못해서 커피 시켜놓고 수다 떠는 걸 좋아해요. 지금은 서로 모니터해주면 조언도 주고 받으면서 많이 의지하죠. 제가 연예인 친구가 별로 없거든요. (김)범이까지 총 다섯 손가락 안에 꼽아요. 아, 요즘 일우가 나오는 드라마 49일 시청률이 어떤가요? 잘 챙겨 볼 시간이 없어서 미안한데, 시청률 1등 해야 하는데.
"After attending Ban Po's middle school, I entered Dang Gook high school. My friends are mostly in the 대방 영등포 보라매region. I got to know (jung) ilwoo through a friend. Both of us can't drink well so we like to chat over a cup of coffee. Right now, we monitor and advise each other, giving each other support. I don't have many friends who are entertainers. Including (kim)bum, i can count them within 5 fingers. Ah, how is ilwoo's drama 49 days doing? I regret that I can't support him by watching since I don't have time, but I hope the drama gets the 1st spot in viewership ratings."-이렇게 바쁜데 막상 쉴 때에는 뭐하나요?

Since you're so busy, what do you do once you get to rest?방콕족이에요. 영화나 TV를 많이 봐요. 예능 프로그램을 좋아하는데 놀러와 강심장 무릎팍도사 거의 챙겨서 봐요.
"???(think he means he stays at home). I watch movies or TV at lot. I like entertainment programs so I mostly watch 'come to play', 'strong heart' and 'knee guru'."-직접 출연하실 생각은 없나요?

Haven't you thought of participating in those programs?아니요. 아직은 준비가 안됐어요.(웃음) 그런데 나가서 재밌게 얘기할 자신도 없고, 다이나믹한 스토리를 많이 가지고 있지도 않아서. 웃겨야 한다는 부담감도 솔직히 두렵고, 내공이 부족할 것 같아요. 지금 할 수 있는 연기에 최선을 다하는 게 나을 거 같아서요.
"No. I'm not ready for it. (laughs) I'm not confident of talking in a manner that others deem interesting, and don't have any dynamic stories to tell. To be honest, I fear the burden of having to be comical. I'm not up for it. For now, I think it's better if I give my best to acting."-촬영하면서 힘들거나 아쉬웠던 점들은 없었나요?
-aren't there any difficulties or regrets when filming?촬영 기술이나 환경이 아무래도 할리우드 시스템에 비해 부족할 수밖에 없으니까 좀 아쉬워요. 영화 매트릭스에서 총알을 피하는 슬로우 장면을 보면 최첨단 카메라 수십대가 동원된 거잖아요. 우리 팀은 전부 수동이에요, 하하. 진혁 감독님이 배우 입장에서 조금 민망하겠지만 슬로우 걸린 것처럼 주먹 날리는 액션을 해봐라. 그래야 좋은 화면이 나온다고 주문하셨어요. 처음엔 콩트 찍는 것처럼 좀 창피했는데 이젠 주먹을 날리는 슬로우 액션에 도가 텄잖아요. 나중에 화면 보시고 웃으시면 안 돼요!
"We're far from Hollywood when it comes to filming skills and apparatus. There's a scene in the movie 'Matrix' where someone dodges a bullet in slow motion. That requires the use of over ten cutting edge cameras. Our team takes the manual way. Director Jin Hyuk (Director of City Hunter) told me that although it's embarrassing from the standpoint of an actor, the scene will come out good if I act in slow motion as I throw my fist. It was pretty embarrasing initially, but now i've mastered it. You musn't laugh when you view those scenes when they come out!"-배우 이민호가 그동안 자신에게 해준 가장 큰, 의미 있는 선물을 솔직히 얘기해주세요.

What is the biggest, most meaningful present you've given yourself.글쎄요.(한참 고민하더니) 집이요. 2년 반 정도 살다가 얼마 전 좀 더 넓은 흑석동 새 집으로 이사갔어요.
"
I don't know... (was worried for a while) house. Having lived in the previous house for around 2 and a half years, i just moved to a new place that is more spacious in Hek Seok Dong."-왜 강남으로 가지 않고요?

Why didn't you move to Kangnam?강남은 우리 어머니가 지리를 잘 모르실걸요. 길 잃어버리시면 어떡해요. 원래 살던 동네랑 멀지 않고, 그쪽에 친구들이 많으니까. 아직까지는 별로 강남에 살고 싶다는 생각이 없어요.
"My mom is not familiar with Kangnam. What if she loses her way? So we chose somewhere which is not far from where we used to live, since we have more friends there. Up to now, I don't feel that I want to move to Kangnam."-마지막으로 시티헌터 시청률 욕심도 날텐데, 올해 목표는요?

Lastly, what kinda viewership ratings would u like to attain for 'City Hunter'?시청률 30%가 넘었으면 좋겠어요. 또 올해 연기대상에서 최우수상을 꼭 타보고 싶어요. 2009년에 꽃남으로 신인상, 2010년에 개인의 취향으로 우수상을 받았으니 올해에는 최우수상을 타는 게 개인적인 목표에요. 정말, 간절히 타고 싶습니다.(웃음)
"It will be good if the viewership ratings can pass 30%. Also i really desire to win the grand prize. I got the newcomer prize for BOF in 2009, the excellence award for Personal Taste in 2010, this year winning the grand prize is my goal. I earnestly desire to win it. 이민호는 개인 트위터, 페이스북, 미니홈피, 공식홈페이지 모두에 직접 참여하며 전세계 팬들과 직접 소통하는 것으로 유명하다. 직접 셀프카메라를 찍어서 시시때때로 공개해 팬들의 전폭적인 호응을 얻고 있다.
LMH is known for communicating with his fans worldwide through his personal twitter, facebook, mini homepage, official homepage . Occasionally he'll also share pictures of himself (selfcam or selca) which earned wholehearted response from his fans.기자가 셀카에 도가 튼 것 같다고 하자, 에이, 수백장 찍어서 한 두장 건진 걸 페이스북에 올려놓는 건데요. 그게 얼마나 노력 끝에 나온 산물들인데라며 손사래를 친다.
The reporter commented "it seems like you've mastered the technique of selca," to which LMH waved his hand replying, "Ae--i, only 1 or 2 pictures are picked out of hundreds that were taken. Those are the product of tremendous effort."그가 촬영장에서 다양한 셀카를 찍을 수 있는 이유는 바로 가족처럼 함께 하는 스태프들 덕분이다. 전담 매니저 둘, 스타일리스트, 헤어디자이너, 메이크업 아티스트가 팀을 이뤄 지난 3~4년간 이민호와 함께 했다.
He's able to capture various selcas during filming thanks to his staff members who are like family to him. The team consists of 2 managers, a stylist, a hair designer and a makeup artist, who have worked with him for the past 3~4 years.때문에 이민호의 트위터 사진에는 이들의 얼굴이 수시로 등장한다. 특히 미녀삼총사인 이민호의 세 여성 스태프에게 이민호란 어떤 사람인가를 물어보자 인간미 넘치는 답이 돌아왔다.
Because of that, they appear in his twitter pictures from time to time.
